Agribusiness is a lucrative sector and with high employment opportunities for the youths, beekeeping for honey production stands out as a promising business venture. It offers a low-capital entry point and the potential for substantial income is enormous. However, success as a beginner in beekeeping hinges on acquiring the right training and knowledge.

You have to understand the nitty gritty and intricacies of establishing, running and managing a profitable beekeeping enterprise focused on honey production business all year round. Honey is a valuable product both local and international markets as it's use as medical in treating many humans ailments and cosmetics industries.

Beekeeping agro venture is not merely a pastime, it’s a gateway to untapped opportunities. The nation currently produces only a fraction of its honey consumption, leaving a vast potential waiting to be unlocked. Whether you’re taking your first steps into apiculture or a seasoned beekeeper looking to enhance your earnings, this article outlines some essential steps that will set you on the path to thriving in the world of beekeeping. Let’s dive.

Get a suitable location for keeping bees
One of the foundational steps in establishing a successful beekeeping business in Nigeria is securing the right location for your beehives or apiary. Your choice of location plays a pivotal role in the overall success and productivity of your beekeeping venture. Ideally, your apiary site should boast abundant natural food sources, such as nearby forests, woodlands, orchards, or botanical gardens, as bees forage within a radius of approximately 3 kilometers from their hives. Having a water source, like a stream or pond within 500 meters of the apiary, is essential for the bees’ hydration needs.

A dry, slightly sloping land with good drainage during rainy periods is crucial to prevent waterlogging. Protection from strong winds, limited pesticide use in the vicinity to prevent bee poisoning, and proper orientation to sunlight are all factors that contribute to the well-being of your bee colonies. Ensuring security from vandalism, pest animals, and unauthorized access, along with providing shade trees for cooling and protection from afternoon heat, will go a long way in establishing an optimal beekeeping environment. Finally, consider accessibility for transportation and hive management when selecting your beekeeping location.

Choose the appropriate bee species

Selecting the right bee species is paramount for a successful beekeeping business in Nigeria. You should opt for the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera), renowned for its adaptability to the tropical Nigerian climate and its ability to yield abundant honey.

Avoid aggressive bee species, such as killer bees, and instead, opt for docile honey bee races like the Italian honey bee. Choosing the appropriate bee species ensures manageability and sets the stage for a fruitful beekeeping journey.

Construct a well-proven beehive

Creating or acquiring suitable beehives is the next crucial step in your beekeeping journey. Get a well-ventilated Kenyan Top Bar Hive (KTBH) design, specially crafted for tropical conditions. Unlike traditional basket hives, KTBH hives offer easier access and inspection. For hive construction, use durable and non-toxic wood like cypress or cedar while avoiding warp-prone woods. Standard KTBH hive dimensions are roughly 1 meter long, 15 centimeters wide, and 45 centimeters high.

Craft sloping hive roofs from metal sheeting for lasting weather protection and firmly attach termite-resistant bottom boards to the hive body. Equip hives with top bars that allow bees to construct their natural comb without frames, saving costs. Apply non-toxic varnish, linseed oil, or wood preservative to safeguard hive components from the elements.

Place hives under shade for additional weather and temperature protection, and position entrances away from the wind. Ensure there’s adequate space between hives for colony growth, maintenance access, and pest and disease control.

Get bee colonies and install them accordingly

You can purchase established colonies from experienced beekeepers for a reliable start. Alternatively, if you have the necessary skills and equipment, capturing wild swarms near your apiary is an option, albeit a more advanced one. Another choice is obtaining bee nucleus colonies (nucs), which are small starter hives with mated queens and worker bees. These nucs allow for colony expansion before honey harvesting.

Alternatively, you can introduce packaged bees by ordering a caged queen and a container of worker bees. Upon their arrival, carefully place them into your hives. Remember, once you have your bee colonies, ensure proper hive placement, necessary equipment, and appropriate feeding to help them settle into their new homes smoothly. This step is fundamental to establishing a thriving beekeeping endeavor.

Market and sell through promotion companies

To expand your beekeeping business, consider collaborating with promotion companies. Under your registered business name and logo, focus on effective branding and packaging as well as provide quality assurance certificates to potential buyers, and seek certification for your honey from relevant agencies. Maximize your reach by selling through both retail and bulk channels while maintaining competitive pricing without compromising quality.

Also, develop sales contracts with industrial buyers, such as confectioners and pharmaceuticals. Reach individual customers through local farmer’s markets, online platforms, and mobile apps. Diversify your marketing efforts to drive sales and mitigate risks while prioritizing marketing and promotion investments.
